Risk Warning: Trading forex and CFDs carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. You could lose some or all of your invested capital. This calculator is a general educational tool and is not financial or investment advice — it does not account for your broker's contract specification, so confirm the contract size and pip definition your broker uses before sizing a position.
What Is a Currency Converter?
A currency converter translates an amount from one currency into another using the current exchange rate — the price of one currency expressed in another. It is the fastest way to see what your money is worth in a different currency, whether you are planning a transfer, pricing an import, or measuring the value of a trade.
Exchange rates are quoted in pairs, such as EUR/USD. The first currency (EUR) is the base and the second (USD) is the quote. A price of 1.1000 means 1 euro buys 1.10 US dollars. To convert an amount, you simply multiply by the rate — or divide by it when converting in the opposite direction.
The rates used here are official European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates, published once per working day. They represent the mid-market value between banks and are the fairest benchmark for comparing what a broker or bank offers you.
How to Use the Currency Converter
Convert between currencies in four quick steps.
Choose "From" Currency
Select the currency you are converting from — USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, and more than 20 others.
Choose "To" Currency
Pick the target currency. Use the swap button to flip the pair instantly if you need the reverse direction.
Enter an Amount
Type the amount or tap a quick preset (100, 500, 1,000). The converted value updates automatically.
Optional: Date & Adjustment
Pick a historical date to use past rates, or adjust the rate by 0.5%/1% to see how a small change affects the result.
How Exchange Rates Are Calculated
Every conversion uses one of three ideas: the direct rate, the inverse rate, or a cross rate.
Direct Conversion
Multiply your amount by the pair's quoted rate:
100 USD × 0.92 = €92.00
Inverse Rate
Converting the other way? Divide 1 by the rate:
1 ÷ 0.92 = 1.0870 USD per EUR
Cross Rate
For pairs without a USD leg, divide the two USD rates:
1.1000 ÷ 1.2700 = 0.8661
Mid-Market Rate vs. What Your Bank Offers
Banks, brokers and payment apps make money on the spread — the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate they give you.
| Rate Type | Rate Used (EUR/USD = 1.1000) | You Receive on $1,000 → EUR |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-Market | 1.1000 | €909.09 |
| 0.5% Markup | 1.1055 | €904.57 |
| 1% Markup | 1.1110 | €900.09 |
Common Currency Conversion Mistakes
Confusing Buy and Sell Rates
Providers quote a lower rate when they buy your currency and a higher one when they sell it. Always check which side of the spread applies to you.
Ignoring Fixed Fees
A "zero commission" transfer often hides a worse rate. Compare the total amount you actually receive, not just the headline fee.
Using Stale Rates
Exchange rates move constantly during the trading week. A rate from last week may be materially different from today's — always check the current value.
